William Heath Robinson

William Heath Robinson (ウィリアム・ヒース・ロビンソン)
1872年5月31日ロンドン(London)北部のイズリントン(Islington)の芸術一家に生まれる。1944年9月13日没。
漫画家、イラストレーター。
奇妙でユーモア溢れるナンセスな機械を描くことで有名になる。

父親と兄弟のトーマス・ヒース・ロビンソン(Thomas Heath Robinson)とチャールズ・ロビンソン(Charles Robinson)もイラストレーターとして活躍している。

イズリントン美術学校(Islington School of Art)とロイヤルアカデミーの絵画学校(Painting Schools of the Royal Academy)で学び、最初は風景画家になるつもりでいたそうだ。25歳の頃に、成長著しい出版業界からこの業界で描くことで生計を立てられないだろうか？と考えるようになった。ふたりの兄は既にイラストレーターとしてのキャリアをスタートさせていたので、ウィリアムも同じ業界に飛び込んでいく。そしてその年、つまり1897年には、

"The Giant Crab and Other Tales From Old India"
"Danish Fairy Tales and Legends of Hans Andersen"
"Don Quixote"
"The Pilgrim's Progress"

という4冊の本のためにイラストを描き、これらの仕事ががイラストレーターとしてのキャリアのスタートになったのである。
その後は、

"The Arabian Nights" (1899)
"Tales From Shakespeare" (1902)
"Twelfth Night" (1908)
"Andersen's Fairy Tales" (1913)
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1914)
"Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies"(1915)
"Walter de la Mare's Peacock Pie" (1916)

といった本の挿絵やイラストを次々と手がけていった。

また、ウィリアム・ヒース・ロビンソンは第一次世界大戦を契機にナンセス感覚に満ちた機械のイラストを描くようになっていくのだけど、それについてはいずれ別の場所にまとめてみたい。
